You're about to read a true story about a very special dog
named Lucy.
Lucy was a chocolate colored lab 'mixed-breed' dog. My
nephew, "JR" had gotten Lucy when she was a tiny pup from
the Humane Society just before they were going to put
her to sleep. She had a disease called, "Parvo" that she
was born with and the success rate of healing wasn't very
good. So JR was told that It would be very 'costly' to
heal the disease and they had told him right off that
bat that he wouldn't even want her because she would probably
die anyway. JR was in his early 20's and has always had
a heart of gold. He said that he wanted 'that' puppy regardless
of the disease that she had.
Once again, they eagerly tried to
discourage JR from taking the puppy. "How can a person
so young pay the high costs of the medical bills and shots
this puppy will need to get well even if the puppy does
recover? This dog is too ill! She'll never romp and play
with you!" ... After giving him the spill on how ill she
was, JR finally agreed, against his better judgment to
put this pup to sleep. So JR carried the pup to the little
room and put her on the table. While he waited for the
vet doctor and nurse to come back into the room, the puppy
quickly jumped off the table and began to frolic around
and play! She became frisky like a normal, healthy puppy
would!
JR's heart
melted again... and he just knew in his heart that he
had to take this puppy home! So he said, I'm taking her
home with me! She'll be okay when I take her to the vet".
So JR took the little puppy home and then to the veterinarian's
the following day.
The veterinarian
said to JR, "It costs hundreds of dollars for the treatment
for this disease you know." JR said, "I know it does,
but I don't care what it takes, I want this dog to live."
The veterinarian's heart went out to JR and he wanted
to help this young man who felt so strong about saving
a little puppy's life so badly. The veterinarian ended
up not charging JR very much at all for all of the treatments
that the puppy had to get.
Lucy healed quickly from Parvo. The veterinarian put her
on a special diet and JR gave it to her faithfully. JR
was a college student and Lucy lived with him for the
first year at his apartment where college kids would play
with her, especially by the pool. But there were times
that JR got very busy into his studies and so Lucy began
staying at my folks home a lot for the next couple of
years. Everybody loved her and she loved everyone she
came into contact with. When you'd go to visit my folks,
Lucy would be right there at the door waiting to lick
you to death and she'd be spinning in circles - being
so excited about seeing you!
Lucy had so much personality, it was almost like being
around another person and whenever she'd do something
that she knew that she shouldn't have done, she'd hang
her head down real low and you couldn't pry it back up
for anything, because she'd insist on feeling bad about
whatever she did wrong. She just felt so much shame because
she didn't want to 'ever' let you down. JR would visit
my folks home on weekends and see her when he could get
away from school and Lucy would be so happy! Whenever
she'd get lonely for JR she'd just get real "blue." You
could tell that she missed the one who saved her life.
I believe that she "knew" what he had done for her and
she would never forget about it.
My folks
took Lucy for rides in my father's boat many times while
the kids would go water skiing and raft skiing. Lucy would
jump into the water each time the boat would stop, so
it was fun to see her jump in and try to get up into the
raft. Here's a few pictures of my kids in the water with
Lucy.
I had
gotten a call from my mother at the end of April 2002
and she was very, very sad and crying on the phone...
It was extremely difficult for her to talk, but she managed
to tell me that they had to put Lucy down. Lucy had a
cancerous tumor on her pancreas that would spread if they
attempted to remove it, plus she had been in intense pain
daily for the past few months. Lucy had a special toy
duck that she loved and played with daily that was buried
with her.
Lucy lived
a very short life of only 3 years...
BUT HER LIFE WAS FILLED WITH 'SO MUCH LOVE!!!'

Just this side of heaven lies the Rainbow Bridge. When a
beloved pet dies, it goes to the Rainbow Bridge. It makes
friends with other animals and frolics over rolling hills
and peaceful, lush meadows of green.
Our pets do not thirst or hunger. The old and sick are made
young once more; the maimed and the ill become healed
and strong. They are as healthy and playful as we remember
them in days gone by.
Though happy and content, they still miss someone very
special, someone they had to leave behind.
Together, the animals chase and play, but the day comes
when a pet will suddenly stop and look into the distance...
bright eyes intent, eager body quivering.
Suddenly, recognizing you, your
pet bounds quickly across the green fields and into your
embrace. You celebrate in joyous reunion!
You will never again separate.
Happy tears and kisses are warm and plenty; your hands caress
the face you missed. You look once more into the loving
eyes of your pet and know you never really parted. You
realize that though out of sight, your love had been remembered.
And now, you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

The Rainbow
Connection
~The Muppets~
Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me!
Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it,
And look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me!
All of us under its spell,
We know that it's probably magic...
Have you been half asleep? And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
It's something that I'm s'posed to be
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me!

Lucy was a mixed
breed with the chocolate Lab breed in her. My folks
couldn't bare the lonliness after Lucy's passing so
eventually they decided to get another labrador puppy.
The newest family member is a full blooded chocoate
colored Lab and her name is Molly.
Here's Molly's picture.
